Signs of Age
Almost two years ago (time flies…), I was in a cafe/record shop in Brooklyn with my good friends Oscar and Ryan. I was killing time before heading to the airport and back to LA, and burning the remainder of the dollars I’d set aside for New York. Oscar and Ryan recommended I buy a record called “The Above Ground Sound” of Jake Holmes.
Once I got it home, I showed off the OG ‘Dazed and Confused’ to Josh then discovered the real treasure. The last track was a semi-somber but super poignant sad ballad about turning 25 called ‘Signs of Age.’
There are girls past childhood, too young for me to love…
The song itself has a pretty bleak birthday outlook, but Holmes’ words about it in the liner notes provide a little more hope:
Signs Of Age — Policemen, athletes and schoolteacher are all supposed to be older than me . . . they’re not. Suddenly I’m not a child. I won’t trade what I’ve got though.
Anyway, today I’m 25. I couldn’t be happier about it. And I’ve been waiting to share this song for a while now, so here you go:
Jake Holmes - Signs of Age (zip)EDIT: And it’s only now that I realize this album has long since been digitized, released on CD w/ bonus tracks and ‘Signs of Age’ is even available on iTunes! I don’t know if I should be apologizing for the hissing in my low-quality vinyl rip or bragging about its authenticity…

Happy birthday, you old such and so. I’ll forgive you for posting a picture of Stephen Malkmus and calling him Jake Holmes.

happy birthday fili. Its good to see you reflect a bit, sincerity is a change for you from the usual ambiguous sarcasm, maybe it comes with age. But don’t go getting anyone pregnant just yet.
